Oxfam International Youth Partnerships 2007 - 2010

We write to you with exciting news – the launch of Oxfam International Youth Partnerships 2007-2010.

We are looking for 300 more young people who are currently working with others in their communities to achieve positive change. These 300 young people will come from all regions in the world and will join action partners from 2004 and 2000 as part of the OIYP network. From 2007 until 2010, Oxfam will facilitate programs to build their skills and knowledge, facilitate exchange and support their action in their communities.

As an action partner, we are asking you to help us find the next generation! Please pass on the enclosed information to young people in your community, country and region.

Before passing this information on, read the 2007-2010 application form and think about which young people you know of that could learn and grow through the OIYP process. You might also want to think about organizations in your community who could pass this onto young people.

Download application forms in word or PDF from www.iyp.oxfam.org. We are also posting you application forms and posters to share with your community. All applications must be submitted on the application form with at least one support letter from a community member or organisation.

We hope that you will take up the exciting opportunity to support a new generation of young people to join the OIYP network.

All the best from,

May, Anna, Nicole, Gabi, Cherie

Powerful beyong belief

are we powerful beyong our own belief? if it is true that the normal human being only uses 10% of his brain's capacity to function on a daily basis, what is to stop us from using the rest? and what will we be capable of achieving once we do. I prefer to look at the positive sides to this like feeding the world, caring diseases and other such things instead of creating WMD and other ills that tend to bring us on the path of destruction.
if we are truly powerful to thta extent then our future really lies within the palm of our hands, we may not know the future but we have enough knowledge to influence it by our present actions, we are capable of setting the ground work for future generations to take the right steps to better our world, we may not save the world but we might just spark the mind that will achieve the social advancements that we all want to see; world peace, equality, food for all and all the other ideals in the utopian world that we always dream about.
the perfect world doesnt exist but in each of us, we have the power to create our perfect situation, a situation where we are in total calm, serenity and in a happiness that cant be disturbed by selfish world leaders who sole aim on the world is to become world powers instead of world leaders.
what happens to this world will remain a mystery but we can word towards its betterment, we can strive to leave this world in a better way than we left it, this should be our driving force, what we strive for, so at the end of our lifetime, we can say we made a difference, a positive difference, as insignificant or minute as we may feel it is, it might just create a change in the person that will make the big improvments in the world. let's just be the change we want to see in the world.

Commonwealth Secretariat challenges EU

The Commonwealth Secretary General has challenged the European Union to do more for developing countries.

Don McKinnon says the EU can become a greater force for good in the world if it places more emphasis on local concerns in developing countries and makes better use of local partnerships.

He said the EU's achievements and potential are not fully realised because "it has not yet fully addressed the trade needs of developing countries."

According to Mr McKinnon Europe hasn't yet done enough to help poor countries trade their way out of poverty.

Imbalance

He also said there was a lack of balance between trade and development concerns in the Economic Partnership Agreements being negotiated with African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) developing countries.

And he cited a lack of will by rich countries to conclude global trade talks in a manner that would benefit developing nations.

"A large number of developing countries are having their preferential trade access arrangements phased out at a pace which makes adjustment very hard to achieve without significant disruption," he said.

The Commonwealth Secretary General wants the EU and other wealthy members of the international community to "give something in return" by increasing trade and aid to developing countries.

Mr McKinnon also said that developing countries are concerned about the lack of by a lack of equity between the financial support given to European farmers and what's being offered to farmers in the developing countries who are also undergoing economic transition.

Beach Clean up
Related to country: Dominica

The Dominica Youth Environment Organization (DYEO) Inc. observed the International Day for Coastal Cleanup, which will be recognized on October 14, 2006. It was the eleventh time that DYEO observed this date with an environmental activity. This year as with past years, the day was recognized through an island wide beach and waterway clean up which was supported by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), United Nations Development Program, the Youth Development Division and a number of local businesses.

The activity although coordinated by DYEO brought together thousands of young persons from community based groups from each corner of Dominica as they not only educate the general public about environmental awareness but to also put meaningful action that will safeguard the environment. To date, DYEO has collected other one hundred thousand pounds (100,000 lbs) of coastal debris and sees this activity as one that not only assist in island beautification and cleanliness but one that members look forward to performing each year.
