The Dominica Youth Environment Organization (DYEO) Inc. observed the International Day for Coastal Cleanup, which will be recognized on October 14, 2006. It was the eleventh time that DYEO observed this date with an environmental activity. This year as with past years, the day was recognized through an island wide beach and waterway clean up which was supported by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), United Nations Development Program, the Youth Development Division and a number of local businesses.

The activity although coordinated by DYEO brought together thousands of young persons from community based groups from each corner of Dominica as they not only educate the general public about environmental awareness but to also put meaningful action that will safeguard the environment. To date, DYEO has collected other one hundred thousand pounds (100,000 lbs) of coastal debris and sees this activity as one that not only assist in island beautification and cleanliness but one that members look forward to performing each year.

The Dominica Youth Environment Organization Inc. is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that founded in 1993, with a mission to improve the quality of life among youth by facilitating their personal development and promoting their full involvement in all social and physical environment matters.

DYEO Inc. has not only organized the International Coastal Cleanup but organized various environmental activities including recognizing environmental stalwarts with its annual award dinner, environmental camps, floating classrooms, symposiums etc.

The organization has experienced significant growth and has been involved in or has coordinated a number of activities and projects at the national, regional and international levels and has conducted and has assisted youth in attending leadership and other training courses. The organization is currently recruiting young persons as members between the age of 16 and 35 who have a keen interest in environmental work and national development.
