GUYANA WINS REGIONAL FOOD AND NUTRITION QUIZ COMPETITION





In a keenly contested finals, the team from Guyana defeated the team from St. Lucia, to win the 2006 Caribbean Schools Food and Nutrition Quiz Competition.



The final round of the competition, which was staged as a face-to-face contest, took place at Phillip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI, Mona Campus, Jamaica on Monday, November 6. Approximately 300 students and teachers witnessed the exciting and thrilling end to the competition. Guyana emerged as the winner with a total score of 260 points while St. Lucia took the second place with a total score of 180 points.



The Antiguan team was in third place while Vaune Mathurin, of Vieux Fort Comprehensive Secondary School, St. Lucia, was the Individual Champion. Twelve countries participated in the earlier rounds of the competition which were conducted through the teleconference facilities of the University of the West Indies Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC).



The top prizes in the competition include an all expense paid trip to Barbados where the achievement of the team of Jamal Duncan, Lisa Mangru, Vanessa Leitch and Cindy Craig along with coach Mrs. Marlyn Davis will be celebrated at an Awards Ceremony. At this function they will also receive the Sagicor trophy, cash and book prizes. Several other prizes will be awarded to schools, coaches and teams from other major sponsors such Grace Foods Services, Dominica Coconut Products Ltd., Nation Publishing Co., and the Caribbean Association of Home Economists (CAHE).


Annually, the regional competition, with overall sponsorship by Sagicor, is keenly contested by national champions selected from secondary schools throughout the Caribbean, with a view to promoting nutrition and healthy lifestyles among students, and assisting them with their preparation for local and regional examinations in food and nutrition.
